On May 22nd, Associate Professor Pascale Hatcher (University of Canterbury), primary investigator on the Mining the Sea project, will be presenting virtually to Massey University as part of their 2025 Development Studies Webinar Series.

Discussing the topic, “Deep Sea Mining in the Pacific and Why it Matters'“, the presentation will outline pressing questions surrounding deep sea mining relating to the climate crisis, environmental ramifications, geopolitical contestation surrounding strategic metals, and what deep sea mining means to Pacific Island Countries (PICs). Particular focus will be given to how PICs and their communities are debating the idea of deep sea mining and how they organise to make their own perspectives heard on the international stage.
