Update - DSM Seminar and ‘Deep Rising’ Documentary Screening

The Mining the Sea research team recently hosted two successful events at the University of Canterbury.

On May 12, Dr. Isoa Korovulavula, visiting from the University of the South Pacific, presented a seminar on the implications of deep sea mining for the Pacific community, outlining ‘the good’, ‘the bad’, and ‘the ugly’ regarding current economic, cultural and scientific thinking on DSM.

On May 13, the Mining the Sea research team screened the landmark documentary Deep Rising. Narrated by Jason Momoa, the documentary explores the complexities of deep sea mining and its significance for the Pacific. Following the screening, a panel of experts (Dr. Isoa Korovulavula, Associate Professor Pascale Hatcher, Alex Teague and Vili Kasanawaqa) answered questions in an interactive Q&A.

Following the Q&A, the team continued the discussions that had emerged at a dinner hosted by Professor Hatcher.

Attendees for both the seminar and documentary screening enjoyed discussing the diverse questions, covering a range of areas including existing and potential mining regimes, the role of science communication, and ethical challenges in academia. We look forward to hosting similar events in the future!
